Renaming files using the photo taken date

Step-by-step guide for naming photos by the shooting date

Select the desired files

First, add the photos to be renamed to the list. You can either use the selection dialog, or add the files/folders using drag and drop onto the program interface.

Click on the button featuring the plus (+) symbol to add the action Insert to the action list.

Specify the position

The next step is to set the position where the date should be inserted. For example, the beginning or the end of the file name can be selected.

With Rename Expert you can automatically rename photos by using information from EXIF and IPTC metadata. To use the shooting date as in this example, select now the entry "Metadata -> Photo Taken Date" in the action menu.

Next, the format of the date is to be adjusted. By clicking Select a menu is shown that contains all elements of the date. For each entry you can select any part of the date. Click on the button featuring the plus (+) symbol to add additional entries.

Check the new names before the renaming

In the preview list, a preview of the new photo file names is displayed. List entries in green font color indicate that changes are planned for the corresponding file name and there are no conflicts with existing files. If a photo does not contain a valid shooting date, no changes will be made to the file name.

Apply actions

If there are no conflicts, the Tasks dialog can be opened by a click on the Apply button. All photos to be renamed are listed there and the renaming process can be started by clicking on the Start button.
